Dr Gabriella Scarlatti

Dr Gabriella Scarlatti is head of the Viral Evolution and Transmission Unit at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, and director of the B cell-mucosal immunity Division of the Vaccine Research Institute, Paris. She studied medicine and specialised in pediatrics at the University of Milan, and otained her PhD in Virology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Her interest has included the study of the pathogenic mechanisms involved in mother-to-child transmission of the HIV-1 and pediatric HIV/AIDS. Recently she has investigated the role of the intestinal mucosa in delivering the virus and cross-talking with submucosal cells to spread the infection. She initiated the FP6-EC funded SSA NeutNet, a consortium of laboratories throughout the world, dedicated to the standardisation of HIV neutralisation assays to be used in vaccine research and clinical trial. Thereafter she coordinated the Humoral Immunity Platform of the FP6-EC funded “Network of Excellence-EUROPRISE”, involved in the study of humoral immune responses and the role in HIV pathogenesis. She coordinated the project NGIN “Next generation immunogens inducing broadly reactivity neutralising antibodies”, devoted to develop new immunogens, adjuvants and delivery systems, to be used as vaccine against HIV-1. She jas published more than 100 articles.
